Context:

This week I completed my Practical Skills Task to Improve the On-Air Image of Youths Choice. This week saw me working with Sam G a year 13 student at Global Academy to help produce the best production possible for Youths Choice

Research:

Two main bits of research I completed this week were contacting Ashley Bard, Group Head of Sound Design @ Global and Dan Hill, Senior Sound Designer @ Capital. I spoke to Ashley about getting new Sound Effects for the new Production for Sam, I asked if he was able to share some more up-to-date sound effects used on Capital / Heart. He responded back to me within the hour with the assets I had requested from Global and pointed me in the direction of Dan Hill to help support us in creating a Sonic Logo. With Dan, I spent around 30 mins on a teams call talking about what Sonic Logos would sound good for the station. Before this, I had sat down for around 3 hours with Sam chatting about what makes a good sonic logo and making/sourcing great examples that we can showcase to Dan to give him a basis for his advise and creation

Problem-Solving:

A major issue I had was one I predicted at the start, this was working with other students & setting deadlines.

Working with other students on a project like this brings risks that they aren’t able to complete to projects before a set date. Unfortunately, due to the scope of this project and the variety of awards being entered, I do need to work and rely on other students to complete this. My plan is to make sure that the students I include to do projects are reliable and I’ve worked with them before. I’ll also set realistic deadlines a week or two before I need the finished pieces. This will allow me to go back and ask for revisions or give extensions where needed.

As I expected the deadlines had become an issue due to factors outside of our reasonable control. We had the new launch of an on-air show, Sam & Myself were given around 1 week to prepare for the show going on air and then he created trails and production to promote the show on Socials after its debut. This threw the deadlines off course a bit as this new project gave a new focus to some of our work. You can listen to the finished production and work parts used here ‘Youths Choice Voice

Planning & Production:

The majority of the planning for the rebrand was done last week, however as mentioned previously there are some aspects of planning and problem solving that I didn’t foresee, most of this week was spent producing the content itself

Practical Skills:

This week was of course the first of 3 Practical weeks of creating these On-Air production workparts and contacting outside experts for advise. As mentioned I’ve been working directly with Sam G to create this new production, supporting and advising him. I haven’t myself been creating the updated production myself.

Evaluation:

Well, this was the week for On-Air production! – We completed the suite of new production for Youths Choice and it’s ready for me to write the entry in just over a weeks time! So far we have heard great feedback from our listeners and presenters who get to hear it and use it every single day
